Folkuniversitetet
Estonia is a non-profit organisation in the field of language learning,
which follows the principles and pedagogic concept of Folkuniversitetet
Sweden. The school was founded in 1993. It started out as a department of
Folkuniversitetet Uppsala until in 1998 the legal status was changed and
it became an independent organisation.
Our main ambition is to offer courses and activities, which help people
to develop their language skills and raise the level of knowledge. The school
is the biggest language learning institution in Tartu, located in the centre
of town, about 500 m from the Town Hall Square (Lai
30). We are well-known for our work in the field of language teaching
and for our international contacts.
Course and Teaching Information
The school offers evening
courses in English, French, Spanish, Swedish, German, Finnish and
Norwegian. The courses start twice a year – at the end of January
and in the middle of September. In addition to evening courses we offer
company courses and individual tuition. Both company courses and one-to-one
tuition are available in all the above-mentioned languages plus Russian
and Estonian. We offer general courses, specialised courses (such as conversation
courses, Business English courses which are aimed at those who use English
in international business relationships, etc) and tailor-made courses.
Methodology
Our students' needs shape our teaching and learning methods but the main
focus is on oral communication. The course participants take an active
part and practise the language in real life situations, for example through
simple dialogues, role plays, short conversations and board games in which
grammar and new vocabulary are integrated. Communication takes place both
between the teacher and the student and between the students. Grammar
is also practised in writing. Pronunciation and listening comprehension
are also important parts of the classes.
Teachers
All our teachers
are well qualified and have considerable experience in adult education.
Some of our teachers have the language they teach as their mother tongue.
Companies & One-to-one
Folkuniversitetet designs courses at request. We work with the customer
to identify which language skills are required, in which situations the
language will be used and what the client most needs to focus on. Using
the needs analysis and the defined language level as a starting point,
we develop a course plan for each group or individual. |
